Sarah and I did this shoot over the weekend. I wasn't really sure what my goal was going into it. I knew the idea I wanted to get across was loneliness, I knew they were going to be b&w, and I knew we were going to use a few smoking-related props... Other than that I made it up as we went along.
I think each of them gets the point across in its own way... though I am not sure which does it best.
All but the last photo was lit with a bare SB600.

I always see the beauty in solitude. But I realize that it is really perception as to what makes someone lonely. "Loneliness is the poverty of self...solitude is the richness of self." ~ May Sarton. So when I see these images only the first 3 make me think of loneliness, the last two make me think of solitude. Especially that last one...she's leaving the dark and entering the light...or is at the line of darkness and light. I see that as the transition between a painful loneliness and and a peaceful solitude.
Beautiful work...so glad I stopped by your blog.
Thanks Trudy!
That is an interesting distinction - one I hadn't thought about before.
Thanks for stopping by - tell your friends ;-)
I think the photo of her sitting alone at the end of the hallway really shows the loneliness.
