Climbing photos at Vertical Relief

Last night, I spent three hours from the ceiling/wall in Vertical Relief and photographing some seriously awesome indoor climbing. A bit of bouldering, a bit of lead climbing, and a lot of fun.

Here are some of my favorites:

Now for the "How-To" stuff.
All the production stills below by Taylor over at Taylor Mahoney Photography.

Three light setup for everything - though the setup changed, the basic format did not.
One light on the climber.
One light for fill.
One accent/belay light.

On the lead climbing wall, I gave my Einstein 640 and Vagabond Mini to my second assistant and sent him up a rope. He hung from the ceiling for a little over two hours, aiming the light with a 20 degree spot grid at the climber. No easy task.

Preston

Eventually, I ended up on the wall as well, generally hanging over the climber as he or she made some time-warping, life-changing badass moves below me.

Preston up top with the light, me on the right, and Blake killin' it on bottom.

Here's me at the bottom of the rope, finished for the evening.

I look forward to doing more of these shoots!
Color versions of the images to come soon - keep your eye on the Internets.

Many thanks to Vertical Relief, Taylor, Preston, Jeff, the other Jeff, Ashley, Blake, Emery, Everett, and all the awesome people who made this possible!
